Vasarely, the inventor of kinetic art and op art

The change of scale in Vasarely’s art was when, as a visual artist, he used a projection machine or overhead projector to magnify his hand-drawn pencil drawings to monumental sizes, projecting them onto three-dimensional objects. His works became inspired by the path of light, distortion, and the study of optical phenomena. His attempts at projection, refraction, and reflection lead him to the principles of his unique kinetic (kineo, Greek: ‘moving’) art, on the basis of which he created his first “high reliefs” and black-and-white works. The guided tour discusses Vasarely as one of the most significant founders of kinetic art and op art, starting with the presentation of his works from the early 1950s until he became a world-famous artist.
