INNOVATION IN CONTEMPORARY ART

OSAS Hall - 10 June– 10 September 2023

The core of the international exhibition consists of works selected from the material of the Masters of Graphic Arts – XI. International Biennial of Drawing and Graphics, as well as painting and sculptural works by other Hungarian and foreign artists. The Vasarely Museum Budapest is the fourth venue in the series of five exhibitions presenting the entire material of the biennial. The show goes beyond drawing, graphics and the presentation of the relationship between the two media with other media as the exhibition deals with the innovative phenomena of fine arts after 2009 and seeks answers to the question of the relationship between artistic innovation, renewal of tradition and the development of art.

The exhibition features constructive, concrete, abstract and conceptual works by more than 50 artists from 15 countries. A common characteristic of the artists is interdisciplinary thinking and a consistent, independent creative strategy. The works were created using traditional and non-traditional tools, techniques and materials. The former include graphite, coloured pencil, ink, pen and cane drawings, scratch and brush drawings, collages, graphics created by well-known reproduction techniques (e.g., copper engraving, photoaluminography, screen printing, cyanotype), photographs, paintings and sculptures, while the latter include computer and plotter drawings, 3D drawings, a drawing of a drawing machine, graphite reliefs, holograms, giclée prints, artist’s books and artist’s book objects, paper and painted wooden objects, paperwork, installation work, computer installation, video and laser animation and video film.

The closing exhibition of the series will open on 24 June 2023  in the Miskolc Gallery belonging to the Herman Ottó Museum.

The catalogue of the biennial can be accessed by anyone on the website of the Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History in Győr.  The exhibition at the Vasarely Museum Budapest is documented by Open Structures Art Society (OSAS) in a separate catalogue. Both help us understand the essence of creative concepts and innovations, the aspects of selection, as well as the radically widening meaning of the word innovation today.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a guided tour on the Night of Museums, a lecture in July and a discussion about the work of four exhibiting artists in September.
